"When something's important, it really matters a lot!"
When my own children were very little, our TV was set on PBS and Sesame Street was watched at least once a day. The songs, videos, cartoons, and skits crept into our family lexicon. The above quote is one from that time. I have a vivid memory of a short animated clip involving monkeys or apes wearing clothes and working at desks in a tree. The female monkey was the assistant to the male monkey. She did not understand the meaning of the word important. He kept telling her, "When something's important, it really matters a lot!"
I don't know how many times I have repeated this phrase over the past quarter century or so. Enough that my own kids say the second half after I say the first, and enough times that my students usually supply the second half as well. It's just something I say. I tried to find the clip on youtube to no avail this evening. Maybe I'll have luck with more searching. Maybe never.
The important thing to remember here is that things that really matter a lot are important.
Of course, each person defines what is important to herself or himself. I begin this blog today by talking about things that are important to me. Will anyone else care at all about these things? I have no idea. But I will freely share my thoughts with you. Welcome to my blog!
